cats and dogs, living together...

points for the reference. ^

and brace yourselves, it's going to be a long post today.

so here's what's going on at our place right now, in reference to the title of today's rant:

that would be lucy and clarisse, apparently getting along. it seems that if i am present, and we can keep the dog out of the cat food and the cat out of the dog food, we will have peace. it's not so bad, really. they're adapting well. besides, it was easier and cheaper than letting the poor pup stay in a kennel for a week and a half. now, instead of laying around in her crate all day, she can lay around on the couch.

christmas, i think, was a smashing success, although i didn't get a few things done on time. the one person (my loving hubby) was very gracious about it and i turned the other one into a christmas/january birthday present. so i have a little more time, though the damn thing is sucking my life away.

here's a funny story for you though... the 23rd of december, i was sewing away on a practice reusable shopping bag in preparation for making one for my brother, because it had been a long time since i had worked the pattern. well, it turned out pretty well, easy, and fast, and apparently i got a little cocky because this is what i did next:

what you see on the right is a proper pattern piece. the handles are on the sides, and the space is in the middle. what you see on the left is, well, not. the handles are in the middle and the space is on the side. i could've dealt with this mistake, but there was one major flaw.

no matter what, the pattern pieces have to match. which means i either need two of the one on the right (preferable) or two of the one on the left. there ain't no workin' it any other way.

and i didn't have enough fabric.

i never thought i'd say this: wal-mart to the rescue! they had 1 yard left on a bolt on the clearance table. talk about christmas luck!

i didn't get a picture of the finished rams bag - it even has a pocket it can fold itself into, but here are the ones i made for me, at various points in the past.

the veggie one on the right is the first one i made, a looooong time ago, but i cut the fruit one out at the same time. the kitty one was the practice bag and i just finished the leaf one the other night when i was bored out of my mind with this stupid soul-sucking crochet project i'm working on.

and the linings:

i think i'll make one for everyone next year. they cost about $5 each, so i'd still have some money to play around with for everyone, but they're sturdy, quick to make, and environmentally responsible.

i've invented other chores for myself to avoid this crochet project i'm working on, but i think it can't be helped anymore. i must return to it, for 40 minutes at least, at which time i will be eating lunch and preparing to embark for work. whoopdeedo. love you all!

crunch, crunch, crunch

i wish it was a cereal thing.

instead i'm feeling the holiday pressure, and the final exam pressure, all coming down at once. it's monday night, which means i will be studying until my caffeine buzz from my Stash White Christmas Tea (spectacular stuff, love it, especially with a 3-second squeeze of honey) wears off, and i will be studying tomorrow, both before and after work, then i will be going to two finals on wednesday, coming home and finishing two (hopefully three) christmas presents, one of which i have to completely re-chart.

i know i don't blog about this kind of stuff usually, but i couldn't help sharing. i did some christmas-presents-for-myself shopping last weekend because it was so cold outside and i wanted more cozy things to wear to work, so i sort of did this...

it's not my fault. i'm helpless and weak in the face of words like "extra-fine merino" and "fifty percent off." i got the sweaters for about $6 each though, so i don't feel so bad. one of them is a brooks brothers sweater.

i made some more headway on christmas presents too. this is the five-spice hat from the crochet me! website through interweave, and as a pattern review, it was pretty easy to follow, though it had a couple major drawbacks. it is pretty though, isn't it?

one: there's an error in the pattern. to fix it, don't do any decreases in round 15 and follow the rest of the pattern as directed.
two: gauge was nearly impossible to get, if you're a tight crocheter, like me, you may want to configure some way to do a size up.
three: instructions on the different stitches used (slip stitch front and back loop, slip stitch decreases) aren't given in the pattern, so you should know how to do them before trying it.

if i made it again for myself (and i'm going to), i'm going to make it just a tad bigger and definitely longer. the earflaps on this one are my addition, and i made it in a yummy thick-thin wool called "licorice."

it's for a twelve-year-old girl, so i hope she likes it!

i don't know why i'm speaking so technically about projects tonight. to keep this one simple, it's for a sixteen-year-old girl and its an adaptation of a knit pattern called "just enough ruffles." wool of the andes bulky, colorway "spumoni."

again, blogging with cell pictures stinks. i wish i had my camera fixed!!

i don't think i'm going to be able to get my father-in-law's scarf done on time. i hope he understands.

more tea. more studying. more crocheting.

Good News!

Somehow, (I'm not sure exactly how - maybe time warped in my favor for once??) I passed the halfway mark with my homemade gifts! And I got my hubby to agree to help with one of them, though I'm trying to convince him to take it over for me.

"Okay, hon, I can help but I've never made these before."

Dear Bairloch knows for a fact, however, that I've never made them either, and that he is most definitely the superior baker (shut up, you are). So here is a public plea from your just-barely-half-done-with-christmas-crafting wife to please, please, take this one over.

I dramatize. I know you'll help if I ask. I love you.

Here's the item that set me over my halfway mark: another McCall's 6049 kid's apron. This one is for a little girl, so i went ahead with the cupcake fabric and the ruffles and the bobble trim. I used view A but left the ruffles off the top and did the trim as I pleased.

Stupid ruffles. I now hate ruffles. My thread kept breaking on my longest basting stitch on the machine (which was quite short anyway) so i had to pin the damn things every centimeter. Lots of sticks. Ick. The bobble trim was too think to turn under and task with the seams and all, so i trimmed it flush and sealed the edges with super glue gel (it's the same thing as fray check but thicker).

Cute flower buttons! The casings for the straps were easier on this one because, unlike the Thomas apron (where I cut the piece wherever I had room left), I actually cut the casing pieces on the bias, so they stretched a bit better and laid flatter.

I'm beginning to panic a bit about getting everything done in time. I'm starting to rationalize and prioritize, which is never a good sign. One family comes first, and I have.... 4 projects and 2 half projects to finish.

I'm supposed to be taking notes in class now. At least I'm here (it's a step up).

Insanity, thy name is Einstein

Not that Albert Einstein was himself insane (remind me to change my facebook profile; I think I may have misappropriated his quote to someone else). Einstein is attributed to leaving us this brilliant little gem:

"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

Clearly, by Einstein-ian measures, I am insane.

Once again, despite giving myself a pep talk a few weeks ago (sort of - that one was about not skipping class), I have ended up in the position of having a bunch of work to do (read: tons) at 10:30 on a Sunday night. And it's no one's fault but my own.

I readily accept blame for this predicament, but to make myself feel just a tad bit better, I turned to Jean Debuffet (like french "john" + day-bouf-fay: don't worry, I had to look him up too. He's a painter/sculpter-type person) who said:

"For me, insanity is super sanity. The normal is psychotic. 'Normal' means lack of imagination, lack of creativity."

So by this definition, because I'm insane, I'm most definitely sane. But if I'm sane, I'm normal, which apparently also means I'm psychotic.

To be insane? Or to be psychotic? Choices, choices...

p.s. No knitting for me tonight.

p.p.s. Okay, maybe just a row or two, you know, to take the edge off and keep me awake at 2 a.m.

two more down

11 to go.

i had my friend Eris over with her two kids and we got a LOT of sewing done today. she got one paper-pieced block done for her harry potter quilt, and i finished these quilted tea towels.

pretty fabrics, no?

and a Thomas the Train apron for Eris's little boy. it's the McCall's pattern 6049, i just didn't use pink, took off the flowers and subbed in plain ribbon for the rick-rack the pattern called for. since there are three different aprons and a few more accessories, there were a TON of pattern pieces to sort through, but after i found the right ones it was pretty easy to follow. the strap is really nifty. it's all one, so the neck is adjustable based on how tight you tie the straps.

i left the pleats in; i didn't think they're too girly.

and i found the cutest blue buttons to go with it. cute fabric too.

11 projects to go.

take a breath...

i keep telling myself it's a learning process. that it wasn't all a waste. i know how to do stuff now that i didn't know before. it wouldn't have worked anyway.

the litany can go on, but the truth of the matter was that the mirrored-cable-with-wishbone-cable-in-the-center-scarf i was making has been frogged (you know, rip it, ribbit). the type of background stitch that allows the cables to pop off the background also has a tendency to curl. badly.

i thought at first a little curl would be good, you know, it would go with the natural curve under the neck, but this was more than a curl, it was a fold. how about blocking, you say? well, that would have worked great it the yarn i was using was 100% wool, but it's not. it's a wool blend. which means it would have blocked beautifully until someone tried to wear it, at which point it would revert right back to where it had been before.

i realized this problem about seven cable repeats into my cowl. so, the first thing i tried was to rip back just a few cables and put in another 5 rows of seed stitch across the entire thing, to kinda make cable panels. that didn't work. so i tried using a different background, which necessitated ripping back all the way to the first cable. i may have had a bud light to fortify myself, but i reminded myself it was just two days work in my spare time, no biggie. so i tried a garter stitch background, but it was just too stretchy, vertically.

rip it. rip it. rip it.

time to search ravelry.

christmas project countdown:  13 projects (plus maybe 3 for my little family)

countdown - 5 hours to bird time

okay, so i'm up a little later than i expected.

the turkey is in the brine bath, which will get flipped at three a.m., then the bird gets rinsed and put in the oven at 6 am, because dinner's at eleven!

herb butter is ready.

sweet potatoes are mashed, rosemary/mascarpone is mixed....

can't do anything else until tomorrow morning.
oh, wait.

clean the stove-top
clear off the chair
clean the bathroom
dust the living room
put away all my shoes
put away all my laundry
hang pictures in the bedroom

nine hours.
four of which i plan to spend sleeping, which means i have, oh, 45 minutes for each task if i'm going to be ready by the time everyone shows up.
oh, wait.
i have less than that, because i also need to finish cooking, and at some time or other, shower and make myself presentable.

here, look at some pretty pictures:

that would be a BAZINGA cross stitch, a basketweave scarflette, and honey-bourbon barbecue sauce.
christmas crafting proceeds apace.

time for sleep!..... ZZzzzzz.... ZZzzzzz

turkey tango

somehow, i got stuck hosting thanksgiving this year. i've heard and read so many horror stories about "the first holiday" after couples get married and try to cook for the families, and i'm a bit freaked. not really, because i actually cook for my family a lot, but i've never done a turkey before, so i'm just a teensy bit nervous.

i have an idea for a fabulous turkey though. i'm going to gently slit the skin, and rub in butter, sage, rosemary, garlic, pepper and a teensy bit of orange zest, and i'm going to put a bit of chicken broth in the bottom of the roaster to keep the turkey from drying out. oh, and i'll be brining the turkey the night before.

potatoes are also on my list, and i'll be making two small potato dishes - mashed sweet potatoes covered with a rosemary-ricotta spread and toasted frosted flakes on top, and roasted sage/pepper sliced new potatoes. and of course, we have to have the classic green bean casserole. i might also do some baby carrots, because i like carrots.

holiday season is tough because it means blogging without pictures. i have several super-secret projects in the works, and i was very fortunate this year to find enough material in my stash for things that i hardly had to buy anything. maybe a yard of fabric here, or a special hook there (yes, i needed it to do a special technique), but that's really it. i think almost everyone is getting homemade gifts this year, baked or hooked or sewn or knit or somehow otherwise crafted.

i'm blogging right now, even though i'm super busy, because the laundry is going mid-cycle and the paint is drying on my dotee. i still have to finish one last dotee for my swap, but i thought i'd show you what i crafted so far.

this is na'tuin (points if you get the reference, and bairloch, you don't count) - she has trouble keeping her elephants on her back. here she is in her new home:

and here's another version of the op-topus i made for the last dotee swap i was in, but this one isn't a creepy eye-ball octopus, just a regular little blue one.

i still did all the sequins and beading on the tentacles like i did last time, and look! there's lunch under there!

this is the one that's still in progress. i plan to absolutely cover the back of this one in sequins.

darn. washer stopped. time to get back to work!

reminder to self:

dear self,
stop being lazy. don't make excuses like "i didn't get enough sleep" or "i feel vaguely sick in a general area" or "i totally get this reading anyway" to rationalize not going to class. it's just not going to work.
see, when you go to class and *gasp* pay attention, the assignments and tests become really really easy.
if you don't, they kick you in the arse.
so, my little morning flower (hahaha), get your tushie up out of bed and GO. TO. CLASS.
signed,
yourself

p.s. you will continue your christmas projects. you will resist any new knitting/crochet/yummy yarn that isn't involved with christmas. resist startitis!

a woman possessed

the fury has not abated.
i finished all three papers (mostly) on time and i was really happy with two of them.
now i have a test to study for on friday and my story is due on monday. speaking of, i need to do a bit of research.

throughout all this i kept at that kinda tiny shawl from the previous post.... yeah... it's big now, and finished. i used the floaty fall scarf pattern from the sept/oct. 2009 crochet! today except i upped the yarn size from thread to worsted weight.

i used a skein my friend gave me (the one in the middle), and a lot of leftovers: the brown was leftover from one afghan, the orange from a jayne hat, the green from the other wedding afghan, and the red from the jayne hat. after it was washed and dried it got really really soft!! my new pretty...

i'm still not getting some of the subtleties with my crap camera phone, but the colors are pretty darn close. i should add it to the christmas pile, but i kinda want to snuggle it instead.

drive-by blogging

like the venerable yarn harlot, i have a habit of overestimating what i can achieve in one day.

aside from personal issues, by 7 pm i thought i was a bit behind, but still had the finish line in sight. reading accomplished, clear thesis picked, arguments planned out. all i should have had to do at that point was sit down and write the damn thing, which should have taken three hours, four at most, allowing for time to find all the proper citations, of course.

real life interfered.

i may have started something completed unrelated just to take the edge off. (seriously, i have to stop reading the harlot before i blog, she's way too influential).

the colors aren't as bright with a stupid cell phone. i'm pretty sure this is "I love this Yarn" and the colors are more similar to their Autumn Stripe, but it think it's been discontinued.

anyway, i still have yesterday's paper to finish on top of everything else on my list for today, so i can be ready for tomorrow.

let space-warping commence

i think i found a way to make it through. i just have to set reasonable goals and stick to them (and perhaps still ignore the housework?)

count update: three dotees, three papers, and two shirts done by monday!

today's list:
go to post office
start reading for paper
cycle while reading to keep from falling to sleep
intersperse reading with making of bleach stencils
finish reading
do shirts
start paper
intersperse paper with crafting on one dotee
finish paper
finish dotee

most people at this point would give up hope of crafting, or say it's not as important as school. this is true. it is also true, however, that my forum is my community, and the place i go to show off my stuff, and i don't want to be locked out of it for not meeting deadlines.

tomorrow's list:
finish other two dotees (after class, of course)

saturday's list:
read and write paper #2
intersperse said reading and writing with holiday crafting, just to take the edge off

sunday's list:
read and write paper #3
enjoy myself at halloween party!

let it begin! (sorry i don't have any pictures to show)

anyone know how to warp the space-time continuum?

today is one of those days when i realize my lifestyle, while it has certain benefits, can sometimes bite me hard on the hind parts (i borrowed that phrase).

for example, by monday, i need to have three papers, two edits (with responses), three art dolls, one knitting needle roll and two halloween costumes done.

problem is, since i get by fairly competently in class by paying attention and taking good notes (i may also occassionally glance at the reading), that i never really end up doing the reading. so, to do these three papers, i have to catch up on all my reading. normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but the reading is either medieval texts (only some of which are translated out of middle english and into regular english), theoretical essays on shakespeare, or unfiltered literary criticism essays, which draw from everyone from nietzsche to freud to derrida. unfiltered. unabridged.

it also doesn't help that my sewing machine is broken, and that i will probably have to neglect all housework and probably a fair chunk of sleep just to get this all done.

see? if i had just kept up with my reading, i'd already have a fair chunk of this knocked off, or at least started. it doesn't help that i'm a master procrastinator as well. i think it comes from being overly controlled as a child. i didn't rebel by getting drunk, or high, or chopping off my hair and turning it green, or wearing all black and getting weird tattoos and piercings. instead, i haven't made my bed in seven years and never do things when i'm told. i get them done eventually, just not when i'm told.

i'm not even going to think about my christmas crafting list.

a cutey pair of booties

I love it when friends have babies. It means i get to make all sorts of cute stuff.
I mean, my one friend has a 1.5-year-old and a four-year-old, and they're a hoot and a half (I love Sheldon), but there's nothing quite like newborns.
My T.A. friend and his wife had their baby boy on Thursday night! So Friday afternoon I whipped up some casseroles and brought them over, and I finished up this tiny pair of booties today.

And one of my husband's friends will have another baby boy in about six months! Here's one of those places where and impulse buy from Houseworks can pay off - I bought a bag that had pretty green fabric in it one day, to match something else I already had in my stash, but, lo and behold, it wasn't fabric, but flannel, and there were kiddie animal prints in there too!

Somebody's getting a rag quilt for a baby gift.

Oh, and I'm thinking about writing a book... On top of the three papers and two swap packages I have due next weekend.

i've been gone awhile....

so, here's some stuff i've been working on since august:

wedding afghan #1:

 homemade macaroni and cheese recipe:

wedding afghan #2:

commissioned necklaces:

scarf recplica (crocheted): it's a christmas present for someone, but i'm not telling who!

homemade meatball and cabbage soup recipe:

coca-cola sleep shorts!

crochet owlets (that's a quarter for reference):

mi frist amigurumi! link from zelda (he got sent away in a craft swap and has a happy new home now):

another in a long line of christmas presents - a cutesy fuzzy hat for a friend's daughter:

i've got about a dozen projects in the works right now, and for today, i cleaned the kitchen so i could cook, put on a roast, started the laundry, and i'm in the process of cleaning our bedroom so the laundry clothes can migrate from the hallway, clearing up the hallway for the as-yet-unpacked boxes from the game room, so we can get the old couch out of there, so the boxes can go back in and hopefully be unpacked, so we can move the big green chair in so the new loveseat can come in from my parent's garage.

i'd rather be knitting.

plus side is we had some $ for furniture as a wedding present from my parents. my brother and his wife chose to get a leather sectional couch, but we waited until we saw a store going out of business and we got a new coffee table, 2 matching end tables, a couch, a loveseat, and a dresser and mirror for the same price. it was pretty awesome. the one end table and the mirror is in storage right now, but we managed to find room for the rest. we got rid of the old tables and gave the couch to a very deserving family we know. the old couch from the game room and dresser are on their way to being sold - we might even turn a profit on the little couch.

*sigh* commercial break over. back to work.

cupcake of the month club?

the problem with cable is you can watch stuff.
distracting stuff.

i love cupcake wars, chopped, iron chef, etc. etc.

and i really like baking, so i might make a different cupcake every month. right now i've come up with, like, 16 flavors, and i hear cupcakes are on the downfall, but really i don't care. miniature cakes, what could be better? i might make my first batch tomorrow. i'll invite the girls over for knit night. see what happens. ironically i'm so possessive of some of these flavors, even though i know for sure some of them have been done elsewhere, but i'd like to think i have a few original ideas.

we'll see.... what's first?

ahhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! moving!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

last time we checked in with our domestic operative, she was frantically trying to get things done before the big day. so, how is she faring now?

well, ok... i guess. i'm down to 17 squares on the one wedding afghan, the other one is started, progress is being made on the baby 'ghan, and all wedding crafts were completed in time! some of the other stuff has hit the back burner for now, but once i'm done with all these stupid blankets i'll be ready to just finish something off nice and quick already.

the move is, um, interesting. going from a 2-story, 4-bedroom house with separate kitchen and living areas to a small, 2-bedroom condo has been an experience. a good one, though. we got rid of $500 worth of stuff (through garage sales and resale) and used that plus some of our wedding money to upgrade a lot of our kitchen and living area things. i've got a quilt in the works for our bed, so we really didn't blow any of our money on that stuff. we got all new dishes and cookware (yay!) and a bunch of small appliances, and we bought an endtable for our bed, new lamps, pillows, blankets, storage... and i couldn't find a shower curtain i liked so i'm making one. seriously. the only damask-green shower curtain i could find was $90 from some online boutique. i bought ivory and green damask from joann's for $15 and a strip of mottled gray for the bottom for $4. now i just have to sew them together.

well, that and put away a ton of stuff. our dining area is currently invaded by a ton of boxes. i wouldn't be surprised if more of them hit the resale store, or, if they won't take it, goodwill, or barring even that, the garbage. downsizing is good for us. really, it is. funny thing is we got most of our furniture in, but it still didn't quite feel like home until all the books were unpacked and i started hanging things on the walls and cooking dinner in our new kitchen. tonight we had morrocan chicken and couscous.

Heat a burner to medium heat... coat a medium frying pan with a thin layer of olive oil. place in two thawed chicken breasts, sprinkle liberally with morrocan spice mix and sparingly with cinnamon (cardamom would really be better). drizzle with a bit of soy sauce, and spoon in 4-5 canned apricot halves and a few tablespoons of juice. when the chicken is done, remove them and the apricots to a serving dish and turn the burner up to high to reduce the juices down to a nice thick glaze. serve with couscous!

then, we were thinking the couscous was such a nice mix between breading, rice, and pasta, that it would be really good to stuff meat with. so now i really want to try stuffed pork chops with couscous, garlic, lots of fresh basil, pine nuts and a bit of olive oil. mmmmmm.

i've been itching to can lately, but i have shoes to put away. sort of a non-sequitor, but completely true.

my first spinning adventure

i made yarn! i made yarn!

courtesy of the fiber boards on craftster, some miscellaneous internet reading and "Start Spinning" by Maggie Casey (and my DH (well, almost... 8 days!), who made the spindles for us), pauraniente and i learned to spin!

we bought our roving from our local yarn store, Home Ec.; just some plain, undyed wool. i think the tage said corriedale, but i don't remember for sure and now i can't find the tag!

so here's my spindles (made from materials found at hobby lobby, and seriously cheap to boot)

and my first skein! seriously, this must be the tiniest skein in existence... it can't be over 2 yards! it's just a single, spun on the heavier top whorl spindle, and washed and soaked and weighted to dry.

my second skein was also spun right after the first one, on the lighter bottom whorl spindle, and i really really wanted to ply it last night, when i spun it, but i was told i had to wait.

but i plied it today!

it's a bit thick-thin, but not so much that it's unusable... i plied it with silver thread, and i want to spin more so i can do it again! here's in skein form, with a quarter for reference.... that strand is about the average size of the yarn i spun.

i actually plan on using it in a creamy baby alpaca hat i plan on making... i can't wait to use my own homespun in one of my own projects. it's so fulfilling.

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

don't know how much longer...

...i can keep up this pace without going mad. all this crafting work (fun, but there are always parts of some projects that, well, aren't), plus the wedding in 10 days (10 days! eep!), then we move right after that... ohmigosh.

official square count for the august wedding afghan?

76

yeah, baby. it makes me want to start another project. yarn harlot calls it "startitis" and i got it baaaaad. i want to learn new knitting techniques, i want to start my hubby's mittens, heck, i even want to work on his vest. do i want to work on the dreaded-tension-cursed-baby-blanket? heck no.

here's my knitting progress:

i think it'll end up being a little scarflette when it's done. i'll put some metallic fringe on there to match the yarn and i'll start combing the thrift stores for a cute little shawl pin to keep it closed, seeing as i have no idea how to do buttonholes yet.

i finished the flower girl basket!

not bad for my first time flower arranging, though the picture is a little washed out. i started with a plain wicker basket, spray painted it silver, added all the ribbon, bows, and gems, added the little handkerchief, and stuck all the flowers into some styrofoam in the bottom. it helps when you've got high-quality silks to work with.

and the finale of my yarn deconstruction process! (okay, the penultimate part, i guess... there's one more skein drying)

ta-da! that's going to be about 775 yards of sport weight yarn. i'm thinking about doing this pullover on ravelry... of course, it is knitting, and my skills will have to take a major upswing on this one. i wonder if i can find a simple rollneck raglan sleeve pullover that would work with the yarn i've got... short sleeved, of course, with a band of ribbing at the bottom of the sleeve and the body...

i gotta stop posting so late at night. it robs me of my wit.

busy busy busy bee

i did sooooo much today i'm kinda surprised i'm still going.

had a wedding appointment, went to the bank, paid some bills, then worked on my knittng, surfed ravelry, worked on the wedding afghan, took a nap, went shopping to get painting stuff, stained, painted, did three and a half loads of laundry, worked on deconstructing the sweater, and did two sinkfulls of dishes.

and watched a movie.

here's some picture goodness for the day.... i think most are fairly self-explanatory
